VIDEO: Colin Munroe f/ Joell Ortiz – “Piano Lessons”

It’s no secret that one of my favorite releases of 2008 was Colin Munroe‘s mixtape, Colin Munroe Is the Unsung Hero.  It’s kinda sad when mixtapes get me more excited than actual full-length LPs (and it’s not because they’re free either).  But sometimes you gotta remember that when artists do mixtapes, they have free range to do whatever the hell they want and don’t have label heads and people holding money breathing down their necks.  Hence, you end up with a better artistic representation.

This right here is probably one of my favorite songs on the mixtape, produced by none other than Detroit’s own Black Milk.  And it’s almost insane that he didn’t hold this back for a proper album release (which is scary when you think about it, because it makes you wonder what he REALLY has up his sleeve).  The video is really dope with interpolation of home movies.  Very creative stuff.  Peep the subliminal drum set flash in the bottom left corner on every drum kick.  That’s probably my favorite thing about this whole video.  Directed by Philip Sportel.

Oh and do yourself a favor if you haven’t already:  DOWNLOAD THE MIXTAPE.
